Local moves across the metro

A local move is priced on hours, and hours are priced on access: how far the truck sits from the door, how many flights sit between the door and the truck, and what the street lets a large vehicle do. Two identical apartments in different Portland neighborhoods can quote apart by hours because the blocks underneath them are nothing alike.
What sets the day here
- The street. Inner eastside blocks run narrow, with mature trees and cars both sides. On streets that tight, the city lets you reserve curb space with a temporary street use permit; where the street won't take a reservation, the carry gets longer and the mover plans for it.
- The stairs. Portland's older housing is stair-heavy: walk-up apartments, raised bungalows, split entries. Count the flights honestly in the form; the estimate builds on that number.
- The hills. West Hills and the southwest heights add grade to everything: driveways that climb, streets that wind, a truck that cannot always reach the door. Crews that work those streets ask about access first.
- The river. A move crossing the Willamette in commute hours is a different day than the same move on one side. Direction and timing shape the schedule, so say where the day starts and ends.
The written estimate
Oregon is specific about this: the estimate has to be written and signed, and a mover can only write it after looking at what is being moved. Expect it to itemize crew size, hours with access built in, and what happens if the day runs long. The number is a projection, not a promise, and an itemized one is the kind that holds up.
Busy stretches
End-of-month and the summer window fill first, here as anywhere. If your dates can move a few days either way, put that in the request; it gives the mover room to work with.
Ready when you are
Send the request with both addresses, the dates, and the obstacles you already know about. A mover covering your town calls back, looks at the load, and writes a number you can compare against anything else you have been offered.
