A blanket-wrapped upright piano on a skid board at a tight stair landing

Portland's older houses hold a lot of heavy things that were never meant to leave: upright pianos in Irvington and Laurelhurst living rooms, grands in long-held Lake Oswego and West Hills homes, safes bolted to basement floors a decade ago by owners who never planned to move. Getting one out is a rigging problem, not a strength problem.

What makes this different from furniture

  • Weight in the wrong places. A piano's mass sits high and off-center. A safe's sits low and absolute. Both pivot badly through a tight stair turn, and the wrong pivot is the damage.
  • The house takes the hit. Door casing, stair treads, hardwood runs, and plaster corners all collect what a careless crew leaves behind. Good crews pad the path before the piece moves an inch.
  • Equipment decides it. Piano boards, stair-climbing machines, skid plates, a four-person carry. Three movers with the right gear beat six friends with confidence.
  • Inside counts too. A piano that survives the stairs can still arrive knocked out of tune or worse. The padding protects the works, not just the finish.

What this covers

  • Uprights, spinets, consoles, baby grands, full grands
  • Gun safes, fire safes, floor-anchored and bolted units
  • Other single heavy pieces: stone-top furniture, shop machines, pool tables, large aquariums
  • Pieces going in or out of the houses that make it hard: tight stair turns, basement doors, hillside entries

What the estimate should pin down

The route through the house and which doors come off. The crew size and whether a machine comes along. Floor and rail protection. And the honest call on whether the piece needs a specialist instead of a bigger crew, which a good mover says out loud.

Send the details

Which piece, where it sits now, where it goes, and how the stairs and doorways look on the way. The mover who gets the request either owns the equipment for it or tells you plainly who does, which is better news than finding out at the bottom of a staircase.
